Clone 96, Chardonnay, Pulborough, 2023

£34.00

Sourced from a 20-year-old vineyard in Pulborough, West Sussex, this Chardonnay is cultivated on unique green sand soils, known for their excellent heat conductivity and free-draining properties, fostering both ripeness and concentration. The high-altitude, wind-exposed site reduces disease pressure, allowing the fruit to mature slowly into late autumn, producing wines with depth and complexity.

This wine reveals a lively and aromatic profile, characterized by fresh floral notes, a mix of stone and green fruits, and a delicate almond hint. The meticulous winemaking process, which includes a low-intervention philosophy, natural yeast fermentation at 15-20°C, and aging on gross lees for ten months, imparts a stony minerality and rounded weight. Partial aging in barrels, with one new and the rest old, adds complexity without overpowering the wine's freshness. The result is a medium-bodied Chardonnay with a beautifully balanced acidity and a mineral-driven vein, reminiscent of village-level Côte d'Or wines, with a touch of unique character from the vineyard’s terroir.

Pairing suggestions include semi-soft to hard cheeses, richer fish like monkfish or swordfish, scallops, and creamy oysters. This wine offers a nuanced and textured experience, perfect for enjoying on its own or with carefully selected dishes.
